Expander-compressor

Expander-compressors are used in process cycles to decrease gas temperature (enthalpy) in petrochemical and gas processing industries, air separation and other cryogenic processes. 

Gas expansion at the turboexpander impeller results in a rapid temperature drop, which is used in the process for cooling down to cryogenic temperatures. Energy generated during gas expansion at the turboexpander impeller is transferred by the common shaft to the compressor impeller and then utilized in the process unit.

Expander-generator

Energy generated during gas expansion at the turboexpander impeller is converted into electric power through a generator installed on the other end of the shaft.

Expanders with hydrodynamic brake compensation are an efficient source of cooling power. Energy generated during gas expansion at the turboexpander impeller is compensated by the brake wheel that rotates in gas, or liquid on the other end of the shaft.

Expander-generators are used for power generation mainly at gas distribution stations and plants. Their capacity ranges from 15 kW to 10 MW. Asynchronous or synchronous generators may be used as requested by the Customer.

Bearings are fed by either an oil pump block, or an electronic system for magnetic bearings.

Oil system can be either water cooled, or air cooled as requested by the Customer. Water cooled oil coolers can be of various designs depending on the cooling water quality.

Turboexpanders with Oil Bearings

Gas is discharged from the oil tank to the compressor stage inlet safely and environmentally friendly via a dedicated oil separator. No complaints regarding the quality of discharged gas have been received from the Customers.

Any viscosity issues are solved by use of higher viscosity oil. Oil viscosity is stabilized at the required level in a week of operation. No anomalies in turboexpander operation have been registered during the first week. Oil bearings of expander-compressors of any capacity lose about 15…25 kW. Oil pumps consume about 1.5…2.5 kW.

Advantages of magnetic bearings:

  • Eliminate the risk of oil ingress in plant units;
  • Reduced weight and size;
  • Oil cooling is not a problem in case of poor water quality, or air temperatures above 35°С without a self-contained cooling system.

Mechanical oil supply system or electronic magnetic bearing system is available.
